Fuura Kafuka: the Super Positive GirlFuura Kafuka is the first student from Itoshiki Nozomu’s class that we are introduced to and certainly one of the most prominent member of the class as she’s featured in almost every episode and chapter. In her student file, Itoshiki labels her as the Super Positive Girl. She is described as Itoshiki’s absolute opposite, while Itoshiki sees the world through despaired eyes, Fuura can only see an endless amount of “positive” or rather, Fuura will only see and accept things that fit her pace.
When Fuura sees Itoshiki, who is ready to hang himself upon a sakura tree she declares that he’s not committing suicide (because who could commit suicide on such a wonderful, spring day?) and that instead, Itoshiki
must have been simply trying to get taller. Fuura’s father himself had frequently tried to get taller whenever the economy slowed down. Despite the fact that Itoshiki tries to explain that he really was attempting suicide and all those other people in the examples must have been as well, Fuura refuses to believe any of it because really, suicide attempts right in front of her? No way.
It isn’t just that Fuura interprets depressing things to a different light, she does this because she cannot believe such things could happen right in front of her. Matoi Tsunetsuki, a girl that exhibits extreme obsessive stalker tendencies on those she develops crushes on is simply a girl who is in “deep love” according to Fuura because stalkers and harassing lovers? No way, those things only exist on tv! Likewise with Kiri Komori, a girl who is a hikkomori (extreme social recluse that seeks to confine themselves at home), to Fuura, the reason Komori can’t leave her house isn’t because she’s a hikkomori (again, because those things can only exist on tv) so instead Komori must be a Zashiki Warashi! A zashiki warashi is a spirit that that inhabits traditional old houses. Apparently to Fuura; a spirit is more plausible than a recluse.
Her perception of others isn’t the only thing that’s skewed. When asked by their homeroom teacher to fill in a form that asked for their future goals – which Itoshiki calls their future despairs – Fuura writes three very peculiar aspirations. Meanwhile Itoshiki happily explains how almost everyone’s aspirations are utterly hopeless (and crushing his students dreams at the same time), Fuura stands and explains how everything is possible no matter what it is… except maybe a few things which we later find out are her aspirations: to become God, to become a time traveler and lastly to become a Pororocoian.
It should be noted that Fuura’s eternal “positive” attitude isn’t always simply optimistic or even a good thing. Kafuka Fuura is the one student in Itoshiki’s class that is shrouded in mystery. Even her name, Fuura Kafuka is really just a pen name. Who is this girl inside, what’s her background, what’s her real name? In one episode with the hot springs, everyone who went in for long periods of time found their “toxicity” removed, their toxicity being the strange quirk/disorder/obsession/etc that each student had. Fuura was the only one who never got her toxicity removed. This leads one to wonder, is she always so naturally positive about everything or… is something else going on? Not much is revealed about her family besides random facts that her father hangs himself quite frequently and her mother was possessed.
What exactly goes on in her brain, we'll never really know.
